The Lord, Jesus.

Clifford Warne lectured us in second year of Moore College.

One thing that stuck with me was that in conversation with friends, he always used to say "The Lord, Jesus". They used to say "The Lord Jesus".

It took several conversations before they worked out that he was being deliberately offensive!

I don't get it. What's offensive about saying "the Lord, Jesus" and why would he want to offend those who said "the Lord Jesus" anyway?

As I recall (I was also privileged to have lectures from Clifford), his point was that many people use the phrase "the Lord Jesus" as if Jesus were one of a number of possible Lords one could have- I have "the Lord Jesus", you have "the Lord Buddha" etc. But if you put a comma there, you are asserting that there is only one Lord, and his name is Jesus. But Gordo, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

That's it precisely, Neil. Clifford was never deliberately offensive, of course, except in a playful way or in a way that snuck up on you as you reflected on it weeks later.
