So I was reading The Hobbit

So I was reading The Hobbit to my 3 sick children this evening, lying in bed. We got interrupted by something or other, and I came back to start reading again, but they had all decided to leave to watch TV or something.

I'm still trying to work out the significance of this.

Either it means the curative properties of great literature made them well enough to get up and watch TV, or they're too polite to tell you that TV is more interesting than Dad's reading!

I enjoyed having The Hobbit read to me by our class teacher in Sixth class, but found it a great chore to read it myself in my late 40s. I had to force myself to keep going.

At the time I was also reading Harry Potter, which I found exciting and which made me want to keep reading to find out why Hermione could be in two places at one time, etc.

I think Tolkien is greatly overrated.

Prefer C S Lewis, but I know it is written at an easier level.
