When discrimination laws become discriminatory

Peter Costello writes:

What happens when equal rights between men and women are so widely accepted mainstream Australia hardly thinks about it? Surely it is time to acknowledge that anti-discrimination statutes have done their job?

Not according to the Victorian Government. It harbours the view that discrimination has got sophisticated – so hard to find under current law – that we must widen the law to catch more of it.

Its Attorney-General has his sights set on men-only clubs (apparently it is OK to have female-only clubs and it is OK for men-only rules at gay venues). The Government has also put religion on notice it will come under closer scrutiny.

The whole article is here in today's SMH.

Costello has the numbers

Looks like Peter Costello has the numbers to take the Liberal leadership.

I wondered this a while back.

He has time on his side, though. Why make a move for a year?

Peter Costello again

Now look, I DON'T want to be the one to say I told you so.

Nelson v Turnbull

It's on.

Not sure what this achieves from Nelson's end. An extra month or two?

Meanwhile Costello hasn't resigned. I don't think we will know the end of this story for at least 12 months, but instability in the party favours him over the long term.

UPDATE: For Nelson, it achieved early retirement from the job as leader. If Malcolm T performs well, that is not just the end of Nelson but certainly farewell for Costello, sooner or later.

Labor fears Costello

So says Hartcher.

The man was the brains behind a strong and growing economy, and is a good debater. So like or loathe, Labor has cause for concern if PC stays.

Costello will stay

This is surely right. Peter Costello will stay and become the next leader of the Federal Opposition.

Costello

Will Peter Costello stay or go?

The memoirs will make interesting reading, and they come out in October. Brendan Nelson still has a few months left in him.

Prediction time

Lots of articles inspired by events surrounding the coming Howard bio. Here's one.

If the Liberals lose, then John Howard's gone. That's a no-brainer.

But I think the Liberals will hold on to power, and Costello will stay.

Proverbs and Peter Costello

I found a proverb I never heard before, and quite like. It's from this article.

"The dogs bark", says Peter, "but the caravan moves on."

A nice way of putting it.

The article from which the quote comes from, however, reminds the reader that not all is happiness and light in the land of Liberal leadership.
