George W. to convert to Roman Catholicism?

According to this report George W. Bush may convert to Roman Catholicism after he leaves office.

From the article:

Several Italian newspapers cited Vatican sources suggesting that Mr Bush may be prepared to convert. One source told Il Foglio, an authoritative newspaper, that "Anything is possible, especially for a born-again Christian such as Bush."

We shall see. Personally, I've often wondered how far George W's claims to be an evangelical Christian have had political considerations in view, and this report doesn't do anything to remove those questions.

Thanks to Tim Challies for the link.

Gordon, I am surprised at your comment, there's almost an inference about Bush being born again for political purposes. Isn't his faith a question for himself and his pastor?

I don't like (at least the public face of) Bush or his attitudes to many things, I don't think his approach to the Gospel is the right one (nor does Sojourners magazine) but I don't want to make windows into the soul of someone I have never met.
Your cynicism disappoints me

The following excerpt from said article might reassure you somewhat:

----"After a stroll through the Vatican gardens, the men listened to a recital by the choir of the Sistine Chapel. However, Mr Bush did not, as expected, kneel in prayer before the Grotto of the Madonna of Lourdes."----

Michael: somewhat, yes.

Peter: No windows into mens' souls on this question, certainly. But also the recognition that the public profession of faith is deeply entwined with US Republican politics, and that George W. has gained a great deal from being publicly and loudly associated with the evangelical cause.

I don't say that he hasn't been genuine, but were he to decide to convert to Roman Catholicism, you would have to wonder what goes on. So, as with Tony Blair, we wait and see what happens when he leaves office.
