Comfort

In the last few weeks I am finding a lot of comfort from these words of Jesus:

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

It's Matthew 6:34, the ESV translation.

In my own mind I translate it into an injunction to believe that the world will end at midnight, and my Lord Jesus will return at that moment (less than three hours now) to put things right.

But doesn't that passage also require one not to store up treasures? What should we do about that?

Hold whatever treasure we have with an open hand.

Indeed.

That verse definitely makes me think twice about my superannuation, or saving up money to buy a home or my CD collection in the room where I currently live. So why is it that churches of all stripes in the first world tend to water this verse down?

I don't know about others, but I don't like what it says!

I applaud your honesty, Gordon. I too find myself uncomfortable with that verse because it strikes as the very heart of my middle-class existence.

I have to say this - if I was able to attain one percent of what is required of me by the Sermon on the Mount, I would be a much better person.
